How is your Spirituality?

Dear CoaH,

The phrase ‘I am so busy’ will come up frequently in our conversations with friends these days. As our lifestyle continues to follow the latest technological developments, our lives seem to get busier and busier. There was a time when owning a car was for the rich only. Most people took bus or train to get to places, getting things done on a limited basis. But what about now? Owning a car is no longer a luxury thing. You can drive your car anywhere and get so much done daily. The downside is that your life is now full of chores and responsibilities. Yes, life has gotten SO busy!

What about smartphones?

Yes, much has changed indeed with the dawn of smartphones. You used to retrieve your emails only through a desktop or a laptop computer. Now, you have all your emails at your fingertip. We return to our smartphones often during the day, checking any text messages or emails to read and respond. The sounds of ‘ka talk, ka talk’ are relentless as they penetrate deeply into our ears.

There is a way out. You could always say ‘no’ to the gadgets and focus on your life. Forget the connection and just do your own thing. But soon, you realize that it is not possible. You are truly addicted to the latest technologies and types of communication. The only way out, it seems, is to check yourself into a monastery. But how many of us will take the option?

The problem is that our spirituality is drying up. Sufficient time is needed to reflect deeply on the Word of God and realize the meaning it gives to our lives. Reading it for a few minutes and moving on to the next item on the to-do list will not cut it. Without a dramatic change or intervention, our spirituality is bound to get dried up. Busyness will eventually ruin our minds and lives. That is why we must follow the Lord. Make it a habit to go to a quiet place during an uninterrupted time of the day and spend time praying to God.

“Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed” (Mark 1:35)

May the LORD bless you and keep you safe.
