Honour Our Parents

Dear CoaH,

According to Apostle Paul, honoring our parents is the first commandment with a promise. What is the promise? Paul says, 'so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth' (Eph. 6:3). If we honor our parents (that is, take their presence and words seriously and uphold them), God will reward us with fulfilling and long lives. What a promise! For the most part, people who honor their parents are decent people who have constructive relationships with others. We cannot say the same about those who have strained relationships with their parents. The chances are that strained relationships in an area tend to invite more strained relationships in other areas. Everything starts at home and with one's parents. We've got to ensure that we have a good relationship with our parents before working on other relationships. That is why honoring our parents is one of the Ten Commandments.

Some of our parents may be difficult to relate to because they are stubborn and insist on their ways. Sometimes, it is hard even to talk with them. We may not speak their language as comfortably as we would like. We may live in a different cultural world from them. So, nothing is easy when it comes to relating to our parents!

Nonetheless, we must try hard to understand and accept our parents. We should not try to change them or ask that they be different from who they are. When relating to difficult parents, we need to ask the Lord for wisdom and guidance. Even though it is difficult, we have to do our best to maintain a good relationship with the parents. Our children will see how we relate to our parents. Our children will appreciate our efforts, and they will try to do the same when they interact with us. As you can see, everything is related.

This Sunday is the Mother's Day. Let us be thankful for the love our mothers have poured upon us. Without the love and care of our mothers, we would not be here today. So, why don't you tell her how much you appreciate her and are thankful for all she has done for you? Take her out for lunch or dinner and show your appreciation. Remember that there will come a time when your mother will no longer be with you. Tell her that you love her.

May the LORD bless you and keep you safe.
