We Can No Longer Put It Off

Dear Church,

We have been listening to the talks coming out of the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 26). Scientists have been warning us that the temperature of the earth has risen by at least one degree Celsius since the Industrial Revolution began in the 19th century. If the temperature continues to go up by two degrees, humanity will face serious consequences due to natural disasters (which are not so natural after all!). Carbon emission is the major culprit behind climate change. So, how do we reduce or eliminate those fossil fuels such as petroleum and coal that emit so much carbon dioxide? It is not that easy to eliminate fossil fuels. If we were to ban the use of coal altogether, countries like China would be in serious trouble. Literally speaking, the country would come to a standstill. Until, they could find a source of clean energy, China and other similar countries have no other choice.

Climate change is real because global warming affects our climate. We have seen it firsthand last summer when all sorts of natural disasters took place worldwide. In British Columbia, for example, the temperature soared to the mid-forties for a long time and killed hundreds of elderly folks. The soaring temperatures, coupled with drought, and wildfire, wreaked havoc in many areas of BC. The village of Lytton was wiped out by fire, and its future is still unclear. While all this was going on, Europe experienced devastating floods. We can no longer look away: yes, global warming is a reality and we must all work together to stop it.

It is one thing for the world leaders and their governments to make pledges to reduce carbon emissions, but it is another thing for ordinary people like you and me to make personal commitments to reduce waste, recycle, and conserve. Next time you are thinking of getting a car, please consider switching to a hybrid or an electric car. Our lifestyle has to change. Instead of driving everywhere, we should consider taking public transportation or walking. If we want our children to grow up in a safe environment, we must make the right choices today. We as Christians should feel even more responsible for earth-keeping because God has given commanded us to look after His creation well.

May the LORD bless you,

Pastor Minho Song
