People Making Disciples

What is the most important thing for a believer? We've heard it so often that it's almost a cliché, but isn't it to be a disciple of Jesus and make disciples of Jesus? The Lord told Peter to 'follow me' and that he would make him a fisher of men.' Before Jesus ascended into heaven, he gave his eleven disciples the Great Commission: 'Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations' (Matthew 28:18-20). On my recent trip to Kyrgyzstan, I remembered the importance of making disciples.

A local leader told me a story: A brother named Akle had always been a drunkard and frequently beat his wife until one day God came into his life. A German brother named Andre was in prayer when he heard God's voice telling him to go to the Naryn region where Akle lived and share the gospel. That is how a white German man came to live as an electrician in an area that was 100 percent Kyrgyz people.

One day, Akle was physically violent towards his wife. She called for help, and brother Andre went to her house with his guitar and started singing. It was a divine moment as Akle felt the incredible power and presence of the Holy Spirit. The music, somehow, made Akle's heart melt. Like Saul, plagued by evil spirits, was calmed by David's harp playing. Akle repented and gave his life to Jesus, becoming the first Kyrgyz believer on record. It was indeed the work of the Holy Spirit. So, in 1987, an alcoholic who used to beat his wife regularly was transformed by the power of God. He then began caring for orphans and sharing the gospel with university students. Andre, who shared the gospel with Akle and discipled him, now lives in Germany. Akle's house in Naryn has now become a house of prayer. Brother Akle passed away two years ago, but his witness lives on through the lives he touched. How precious it is to be a disciple of Jesus and yet make disciples of Jesus in many miraculous ways, as Andre and Akle have done!
