Superman is a different hero

Dear Church,

My grandson lives to play Superman. When he says “Grandpa, I want to be Superman,” I place him in my two arms and pretend that he is flying. I say, “here we go” and try to move him up and down or sideways. This game is getting harder and harder for me because my grandson is getting heavier and heavier! My arms tire easily, and I gasp for air shortly. I don’t know how long I can do this but because he enjoys it so much, I will try to extend it as much as I can.

I spotted a Superman cartoon in the newspaper this week. The article was rather shocking to me because the next generation Superman, the son of Kal-El, is into same-sex attraction. Feeling so burnout from trying to save the world which is gone mad with climate change and other issues, Jonathan Kent (the new Superman) falls for a reporter. He appreciates the warmth of Jay Nakamura and decides no longer to hold back his emotions. There is, the new Superman thinks, no need whatsoever to conceal his feelings for another man.

We should remember how powerful images like Superman or Spiderman are in the minds of young children. When the creators of these cartoon series decide to write the scripts, we can be certain that everything they write is intentional. In this case, they want to teach children that same-sex relationships are perfectly normal. Let me repeat: they are driven by their agendas, and we should be fully aware of what is going on.

My concern is that our children will grow up so confused. They hear one thing from Sunday School about God’s intention for a man and a woman to become one. But then they will be exposed to another ‘credible’ source that same-sex relationships are okay. I hope we as parents will not be so naïve about what is going on: Just because you bring your children to Sunday School every week, it does not mean your children are well protected. Their coming to church on Sunday does not guarantee that they will have the power and wisdom to discern what the Bible says about marriage and family. Parents, we are living in tricky times. Please check to make sure that what your children are watching (or reading) is something you approve of.

May the LORD bless you,

Pastor Minho Song
