Hymn of the Month - 2021
Hello Church,
Greetings in the glorious name of Jesus Christ our Lord.
Today’s devotion is written by Pastor Tim on the subject of worship. You will be greatly benefited by these words:
Hymn of the Month - 2021
One thing that has been dearly missed is being able to gather and worship as one community. There is something about meeting together and singing and proclaiming wonderful truths of who our God is and what He has done for us. It just doesn’t feel the same not hearing each others’ voices. It has been an adjustment and at times, a challenge, to worship online from home, but that doesn’t mean that our worship to God ceases.
This year, we are starting a new initiative called, “Hymn of the Month”. Each month, we will focus on a hymn (old or modern), and the goal is to go deeper in understanding what we are singing. Parents, this would be an awesome way of teaching your child(ren) Biblically-rooted songs that we sing regularly. Colossians 3:16 says, “Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.”
During the month, learn, teach, and sing the hymn with your children. The beauty of focusing on one song each month is that you get opportunities to talk about it. As children learn the song, you can ask them, “What does this word mean?” or “What’s the meaning of the song? You can share stories of how this hymn has impacted you.
Some benefits of taking the time to go in-depth with each hymn are:
1. We are learning and singing the attributes of God.
2. It deepens our Christian/Biblical worldview.
3. The lyrics provide us with words to pray.
This could seem overwhelming, but God has given you the responsibility to share your faith with your child(ren) and hymns are a great way to teach them about God. Here are some tips to help you get started:
1. Start by simply listening to the song.
2. Set aside time and opportunities to play the hymn (for example, on the way to the grocery store, at the breakfast table, during family devotions).
3. Use musical instruments to learn the song and sing it.
4. A great time to sing together could be in the evening before going to bed.
5. We will be singing the hymn of the month regularly on Sundays, so practice with the family before Worship Service.
6. Record your children singing the hymn.
However, this isn’t just for families. We can all follow these tips and deepen our appreciation for these hymns (old and new). Let us all use this opportunity to grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus through the meditation and understanding of the wonderful truths we sing. I’ve compiled a playlist on CoaH’s YouTube channel of the first 6 hymns we will be focusing on the first 6 months. For January, it’s the new song that was introduced called “Only a Holy God”. Here’s the link.
Also, here’s the list for the first 6 months:
January: Only A Holy God
February: Christ Our Hope In Life And Death
March: How Great Thou Art
April: Yet Not I But Through Christ In Me
May: All I Have Is Christ
June: His Mercy Is More
Church, God is our holy God and most worthy to be praised. This year, may we grow in our love for Him as we sing with gratitude in our hearts.
Soli Deo Gloria
