Right after the Civic Holiday, Lyka, Dylan, Miga, Erica and I joined Toronto City Mission (TCM) and served at Sonshine Day Camp children’s program in St. Jamestown (SJT), where we ministered to children aged 6 to 12 by leading fun activities such as art crafts, food crafts, and music.
Prior to joining TCM, our church, City on a Hill, had several sermons on missions focusing on Matthew 9:35-38: “The harvest is plentiful but workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field”. I learned that Jesus calls every follower to be involved in His mission which is to proclaim Christ as the only savior from sin and only way to eternal life. This led me to pray for God to send more workers into his harvest field and also for God to send me. J.D Greear mentioned in his book, Gaining By Losing that the question is no longer if we are called, only where and how. It means that all believers are called to go into His harvest field, we just need to ask God where and how.
After praying for weeks, I was convinced that I should go and join SJT summer missions this year. But the preparation was not a smooth process for me. This summer, I felt like my church commitments and family commitments were competing against each other. I felt burnt out, stressed and discouraged. I told Gill that I am on the verge of giving up summer missions because I felt like I have too much on my plate, but through God’s strength and wisdom, I was able to continue and got reminded of what He called me to do.
On the first day of camp, I met this little boy named “Noah”. Noah was the first kid who welcomed me by saying, “Hi stranger. What’s your name?” and then our friendship started there. I praise God because I was able to share my faith and the Gospel to him. I also praise God for my team who also bonded with other children not only by being their leaders but also by being their friends. By God’s grace, we were able build relationships with these children.
On the last day, the kids played a game where they had to finish a Bible verse puzzle. The
Bible verse is 2 Timothy 4:7: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith”. This really spoke to me because I was on the verge of quitting summer missions, but God gave me the strength and encouragement so that through me and my team, the love of God might be proclaimed to these children.
So, to my brothers and sisters, I encourage all of you to be prayerful about where and how God will use you to accomplish His mission. Sharing the Gospel is our mission, but we cannot do this alone. God gives us the strength, wisdom and desire to witness. As followers of Christ, there is no greater sense of fulfillment than to know that you have accomplished what the Lord has called you do to for His glory!
